Correcting the record on Thaidene Nene: April 1, 2015

Dear Editor:

RE: March 30, 2015 News North story “National Park designation no longer being considered for Thaidene Nene”

News North’s recent reporting on recent discussions between Łutsel K’e Dene First Nation and the Government of the Northwest Territories on the establishment of Thaidene Nene is wrong on several key points.

Allow me to correct the record.

Both LKDFN and GNWT continue to support the establishment of a federal national park reserve in Thaidene Nene that will be combined with territorial protected areas to maximize northern benefits and ensure northern governance of this important cultural landscape.

While there will be fewer restrictions on the use of Thaidene Nene by non- indigenous northern residents, mineral exploration and other industrial developments will not be permitted.

Our goal is to ensure that Thaidene Nene is protected forever. To that end, we are partnering with Parks Canada to establish a federal national park reserve, and with the GNWT to implement new, Northern tools for conservation. We’ve worked hard with both Parks Canada and the GWNT to ensure that these lands will be managed in accordance with Dene values and will be respectful of Northern lifestyles.

LKDFN and GNWT have issued press releases to further clarify the Thaidene Nene process, and we invite News North to continue to follow this important conservation initiative.
