Candidate Protected Areas
Dinàgà Wek’èhodì
Dinàgà Wek’èhodì is a candidate area of approximately 790km2 situated on the northern portion of the north arm of Great Slave Lake. The Tłįchǫ Government identified this area for protection because of its cultural importance to the Dena and Métis who have used this land for centuries. In addition to being classified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) for migratory birds, a number of species at risk rely on this area, including the boreal woodland caribou, wolverine, wood bison, and a number of bird species. Comprised of numerous islands, mainland shoreline, and the lake itself, this area also holds recreational values and is a popular place for fishing, hunting, ecotourism and outfitting.
